I suggest testing your old digidesign 002/003R/003R+ with the latest Linux kernel ALSA firewire sound driver. Apparently the clicks and pops are gone!
The tree is not quite merged into mainline kernel but you can get it from here with the right changes:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound.git
- git hash 82b954a96c1550bae2cb1f1f4f084425ab237cd7 (or newer)
Here is a link to at least one report of it now working:

Thank you Takashi S for your work!

Use Linux kernel 5.14 or greater. It’s merged in there.
Hello,
I have been playing with an 003 Rack all afternoon trying to get it to connect. It may be a lot to ask, but could you send specific instructions? I have followed the instructions from here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv3b9HZf5Ko but it still doesn’t show in Audacity, AlsaMixer, or LMMS. I know it must be me. Additionally, I tried to upgrade my kernel to 5.15.12 but that didn’t happen for reasons unknown.
Thank you!
Lance Moore: You definitely need to upgrade your kernel if its older than 5.14 because the driver was fixed in that release. Once you have that kernel upgraded, the 003 will show in
aplay -l
listing as a sound card.
